Principal
SUSAN L. HENDRICKS

Susan L Hendricks grew up in a military family of nine, attending eight schools before settling in Southern Californina as a senior in high school. Her college undergraduate and some graduate work was completed at UCSD and USB (University of California at San Diego and Berkeley.) Currently, Susan is obtaining a Masters Degree in Administration from the University of Notre Dame. She finished her eleventh year as a classroom teacher when the opportunity to become the school administrator was offered to her. This is her ninth year as the Sacred Hearts School principal. Relocation to Maui 15 years ago, she began teaching middle school. There’s no place she would rather be than here, navigating the collective vision of academic excellence with the teachers, students and parents of Sacred Hearts School. VANESSA PERRY

Mrs. Perry was born and raised on Oahu. In 1973, she graduated from Farrington High School and started her first job as a preschool teacher’s aide at the “Family Development Center” in Honolulu. She received her first certification for CDA (Children’ Development Association) in 1975 and her second certification in 2000. She has been teaching a total of 30 years. She has two children, one at MCC and one at University of Hawaii at Hilo. Vanessa has been dancing hula for 54 years and has taught hula across the country for conventions. She has choreographed several luau shows including Sheraton, Hyatt, and Royal Lahaina and also instructed hula for AECG. She continues her education in Early Childhood Development and Hawaiian Language and May Day Director.
STEPHANIE ASUNCION

Stephanie was born and raised right here on the West Side of Maui. She graduated from Lahainaluna in 1992 and attended Maui Community college. She earned an Associates in Science degree in Human Services with an emphasis in early childhood education. She has been working with children for 19 years and she is very excited to be part of the Sacred Hearts School Ohana. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her children and walking her dog. She is currently attending the University of Hawaii Maui Campus, pursuing a degree in education.

WENDY COON
Wendy Coon attended Sacred Hearts School as a girl, from grades 5th through 8th grade. She went on with her Catholic education at St. Anthony. Wendy attended and eventually graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1992, with a degree in early Childhood and Elementary Education. She went on to receive a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education specializing in Multicultural Education in 1997, from the University of Hawaii. This year marks her 10th year in the classroom and at Sacred Hearts School. Wendy taught first and second grade during her first 6 years of teaching then moved to kindergarten for 4 years. I LOVE teaching kindergarten kids!
Wendy Coon lives in Lahaina with her husband, Hopsing and two girls Kapua, who is 8 and Anuhea, who is 4. In her spare time, she is involved with the Halau Ke’alaokamaile. Wendy also loves to spend time with her family and friends. She is very happy to be on staff at Sacred Hearts.
Kindergarten Aide
STACY DAGUPION

Born and raised on this beautiful island of Maui and residing in Lahaina, Stacy is the youngest child from a family of 10 (6 brothers and 3 sisters.) she worked as an aide in the ELC for 3 years and she is presently the KDG aide in the morning, works in the office for a few hours in the afternoon and runs the Afterschool Program. Stacy has 3 children. She enjoys spending time with her family (her WHOLE family) whenever they can get together.

1st Grade
DANA KIRBY

Dana was born in South Florida. She attended Catholic School from Kindergarten through 12th grade. She graduated from the University of Florida where she received a Bachelor of Science degree and then received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education form Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Immediately following graduation in 1999, she began teaching 4th grade at St. James Cathedral School in Orlando, Florida. She continued to teach up until her son, Tyler, was born in March 2002. Dana, her husband Scott and son Tyler then moved to beautiful Maui one year later. This is her sixth group of First Graders at Sacred Hears School. She truly enjoys teaching the primary aged child and feels extra blessed to be at a Catholic School where her own roots are.
2nd Grade
TONATA LOLESIO

She was born and raised in the Kingdom of Tonga and at age five moved to Hawaii with her parents. She began her education at King Kamehameha III Elementary School and graduated with the class of 1994 from Lahainaluna High School. She is the eldest in the family and the first to attend MCC where she received an Associates of Arts degree. She graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Speech. Tonata completed her Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix. She is involved with the Tongan and Maria Lanakila Youth Groups.She is the Director of Religious Education and is involved in the sacramental preparation of First Holy Communion. As an educator, she hopes to inspire an appreciation of learning.

AILENE SCHWARZLOW

Ailene was born and raised on Oahu and graduated from Wai’anae High School. She attended and graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa obtaining her Master’s Degree in Social Work. This is Ailene’s 5th year working at Sacred Hearts School. She has two sons: Joshua in the 8th grade and Noah in 2nd Grade. She is looking forward to an exciting and memorable year at Sacred Hearts School.

KATIE TURSI LEE
Katie Tursi Lee was born in Des Moines, Iowa where she attended Catholic schools from kindergarten through twelfth grade. She continued her education at Iowa State University where she received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education with an endorsement in Special Education and Reading. She looks forward to continuing her education throughout her teaching career. This will be Katie's sixth year at Sacred Hearts School. She taught fourth grade for four years and was most recently the after school teacher for a year. Katie is excited to teach third grade. Katie loves the community and support of Sacred Hearts and looks forward to her new venture in the third grade. Katie lives in Kahana with her husband Chul and daughter Mia.

SUSIE SLEAR

Susan moved to Maui July 2010 and will be teaching 4th grade again after teaching four years of 4th grade in San Antonio, Texas. She moved here with her husband, James, and two daughters, Kristine and Katie. Katie, a Sacred Hearts 7th grader, will ride with her mom from Kihei. Kristine will return to New York this fall to continue with college. Susan grew up on Long Island, New York. She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1998. She has taught in Virginia, Ohio, Texas and the Republic of Korea. This is her 13th year teaching.
5th Grade
CHRISTOPHER KENT

Mr. Kent is fired up for another year at Sacred Hearts, and is thrilled to be back on the Westside to instruct what will be his 17th class of 5th graders. His prior teaching experience involves nine years at St. Joseph's in Makawao, and six years at St. Catherine's in Redondo Beach, California, where he was born and raised. Chris earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara, along with graduate work at the University of California at San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Chris gives special tribute to his elementary education at St. Lawrence Martyr School in Redondo Beach for fostering his deep fascination with the sacred mysteries of the Roman Catholic Faith. It was also here where Chris would meet his future wife while attending Mass. Chris and Mary wed in the Sacred Hearts Chapel in Kapalua in 1995, and moved to Naplili in 1996. Chris firmly believes that we are all called to use our special gifts and talents to build up the Kingdom of God. In this way, it is his endeavor to challenge and inspire his students to engage their concepts with ‘gusto’ … to push for their potential … and to get passionate about the learning process. Chris puts a premium on keeping things fresh and fun, and incorporates generous amounts of Rockin’, Rappin’, Rhymin’ and Rhythm as an enjoyable means to enhance and reinforce lesson content. Mr. Kent enjoys ocean activities, various artistic and musical outlets for creative expression, and especially enjoys spending time with his wife Mary, daughters Natalie and Kailie, and dogs Mocha and Hanalei.

PATTY WURST

Although born in Honolulu, she was raised in Southern California. After returning to Hawaii to be with her family on Maui, she graduated from Chaminade University in Honolulu. This is her 12th year at Sacred Hearts School after teaching for eight years in the public school system. She enjoys teaching junior high school, in particular the Social Sciences. She lives upcountry with her husband and dog. Mrs. Wurst enjoys traveling. Her academic goal for this year’s social studies program is to have more students participate in History Day at the State and National Level, to increase geographic literacy, and to take as many students as possible to Washington D.C. for the class field trip in October 2012.

MARY ANNA WALDROP

Mrs. Waldrop was born and raised on a cotton farm in New Mexico and became passionate about sailing at the age of 14. After receiving her BA in Psychology and Special Education and an MA in Reading from Whittier College, where she also taught, she spent seven years sailing throughout the Pacific on her 30’ sailboat, “Finesse”.
Mrs. Waldrop is beginning her 12th year teaching middle school literature, English and religion at Sacred Hearts School. She is passionate about students’ learning styles. When she’s not at school, Mrs. Waldrop facilitates labyrinth walks, hikes and travels (first choice always by sailboat). Makana, her Golden Retriever, happily greets the Sacred Hearts Ohana as she has for the last five years.

TOM POPDAN

Coach Tom is originally from the Philadelphia area. He attended Villanova University on a swimming scholarship. There he received a B.S. in Business and Marketing. He has been a swim coach for more than 28 years coaching such teams as Temple University, University of Virginia, and Mission Bay. He successfully swam the English Channel. This is his thirteenth year teaching P.E. and computer classes at Sacred Hearts School. He is in his 18th year coaching Lahainaluna High School Swim Team and Lahaina Swim Club where he has won 10 state titles.
Music/Drama
LORI ULMAN

Mrs. Ulman is a native Michigander who earned her B.A. with a major in Music from Wayne State University in Detroit. She has certificates of completion in Drama from regional performing arts theaters as well as continuing education through seminars and workshops in liturgical music. Mrs. Ulman’s instructional seminars also include ministering a youth choir, instructing acting techniques and directing plays. Her performing experiences include tours of Europe with the Detroit Archdiocesan Chorus and cantor for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Detroit. She is presently one of the cantors at Maria Lanakila and occasionally subs as music minister at Holy Innocents Episcopal church. Her interests include golfing, antiques, traveling and watching the beautiful Maui sunsets with her husband of 27 years.
Hawaiiana
KEHAUNANI KA'AUWAI

Kumu Ka’auwai grew up in a Northern California town named Fremont. In that town there is one of California’s many missions named Mission San Jose. She spent her summers in Honolulu with her Gramma or in Anahola, Kaua’I with her aunties and uncles. There she spent her days playing in the river and ocean and living Hawaiian culture. She graduated from Mission San Jose High School and attended three different colleges to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology and her teaching credentials from California State University, Hayward. Kristen met her husband on the swim team in college and they have four children, two boys and two girls. The two oldest graduated from Sacred Hearts School, as well as, Kamehameha Schools Maui. Her youngest son and daughter attended Sacred Hearts School before moving up to Kamehameha Schools. Kristen moved her family to Maui 9 years ago to enrich them in their Hawaiian culture and language, something that she experienced while spending summers in Hawai’i, and will also share that with all of her students here at Sacred Hearts in the second semester of 2011-12.

WENDY LAUREL-SHEVELAND
Wendy grew up in Maryland but moved to Berkeley, California before high school. She graduated from University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. in Economics. She then attended Stanford Law School and received her Juris Doctrate. After law school, Wendy moved to Oahu to law clerk for a federal judge and then went to work as an attorney on Kauai. On Kauai, besides working as an attorney, Wendy taught Economics at Kauai Community College as well as teaching on-line law classes for University of Phoenix. In 1998, Wendy with her son Nalu moved to Maui and went to work for the Law Offices of Joy Yanagida, where she is presently of counsel. Eight years ago, she started taking photography classes. She has taken four photography courses at Maui Community College, as well as completing a one year course from the New York Institute of Photography, and online photography courses from Academy of Arts University in San Francisco, as well as various seminars. Wendy now works as a photographer part-time, taking clients for maternity, baby, child, and family portrait sessions. Her work can be viewed at wendylaurel.com. Wendy has four children: Nalu, a sophomore at Lahainaluna, Hannah and Noelle, both students here at Sacred Hearts School, and 3 year old Noah.
